Pharmacokinetics

Gentamycin is not well absorbed by oral route, hence it is usually given parentrally. After IM injection it reaches a peak level in 60 to 90 mins. It is bound to plasma proteins and is excreted unchanged by glomerular filtration via the kidneys.

Indications

It is active against some gram positive and many gram negative organisms like E.Coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, Staph. Epidermidis, and Listeria Monocytogenes and Campylobacter.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

It is given IM or IV . Adults: 1 mg/kg body wg 8 hrly IM. Children 6 months-10 yrs: 2- 2.5 mg/kg 8th hrly. Children over 10yrs : 1.5mg/kg 8 hrly.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in hypersenitivity to aminoglycosides, Renal impairment, hepatic disease and hypotension.

Precautions

Precaution to be taken in patients with nephrotoxicity, allergy, fever, ototoxicity,and convulsions.

Interactions

There is increased ototoxicity when used with ethacrynic acid. Potentiates neuromuscular blocking agents.
