Pharmacokinetics

It is completely absorbed and is distributed throughout the body, it has elimination half life of 11 hrs, and are excreted by kidney.

Indications

Fluoroquinolones are used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. They are both bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic. It is effective against both gram positve and gram negative organisms including : Pseudomonas, gonoccoci, H.influenzae, staphylococci, streptococci etc. It is not active aginst anaerobes. It is not effective for Rhinitis, Influenza, or other viral infections.They are mainly used for GIT infections.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Oral: Adults--400 mgs bid 7 to 10 days taken along with food.IV Infusion: IV: Adults: 400mgs in 100ml of 5% dextrose slow infusion over 1 hr bid.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in children below 12yrs, convulsion, pregnancy, lactation and in hypersensitivity.

Precautions

With Brain or spinal cord disease, including arterisclerosis in the brain or epilepsy or other seizures : Fluoroquinolones may cause neurological symptoms, renal impairment and hepatic disease: Patients with renal disease (alone) or renal disease and hepatic disease (together) may have an increased chance of side effects.

Interactions

With : Antacids, Iron supplements or Sucralfate : These prevent Perfloxacin from being effective. Didanosine : Didanosine may reduce the effectiveness of Perfloxacin.
