Pharmacokinetics

Sulfadimidine is rapidly absorbed from the gut and rapidly excreted in urine. It is acetylated to a greater extent. The acetylated derivative is less soluble in urine, hence crystalluria is more likely.

Indications

Sulfadimidine is one of the relatively older, general purpose sulfonamides.It is one of the agents in triple sulfa. It is used to treat lower urinary tract infections[E . coli, Proteus], meningococcal meningitis, streptococcal pharyngitis & gum infection and bacillary dysentery[shigella].

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Oral : 0.5 gms QID to 2 gms TDS.

Contra Indications

Sulfadimidine may be contraindicated in Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, Renal failure and in porphyrias.

Precautions

Allergic reaction to sulfa drugs may occur sometimes. Elderly adults are especially sensitive to the effects of sulfonamides. Severe skin and blood disorders may be more likely to occur in the elderly. The adverse effects may also be more likely to occur in patients who are taking diuretics together with these drugs.

Interactions

Sulfadimidine inhibits the metabolism of phenytoin, tolbutamide, and warfarin-enhances their action. It increases the toxicity of methotrexate.
