Pharmacokinetics

Sulfathiazole is poorly absorbed from the gut.They act locally in the colon.the Tissue concentration is very poor.Small amount of sulfathiazole that get absorbed can cause toxicity including crystalluria.There are few valid indications now.

Indications

Sulphathiazoles are used for treating diarrheas and for preparation of bowel before colonic surgery.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Oral dose: Adults = 5-10 g daily in divided doses. Children = 250 mg/kg/ 24 hours.

Contra Indications

Sulfathiazole is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the drug. Use of sulfathiazole may be contraindicated in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, renal disorders and hepatic disorders.

Precautions

Special precauton to be taken in elderly, pregnancy and lactation.
